It has been a while since my last post and I have no real reason except for it is summer and I have been busy working and going on some small trips! I am currently working on two projects but they are both quite large and are taking a while to complete. I recently had a really good food experience while I was back-country camping last weekend so I thought I’d share it with you.
Last weekend, while I was camping, my buddy and I went fishing before breakfast and caught a perch. We figured that we would just put it on the stringer and save it for dinner that night. Breakfast came along and we were having bacon and pancakes (we forgot our eggs haha). After cooking the bacon we had quite a bit of bacon fat left in the pan; this got us thinking.
What we did next was by no means healthy but it sure did taste really good! If you are ever looking for a delicious way to use up bacon fat while you are camping, and not attract any bears during the night, this is a method worth considering.
What You’ll Need:
- camping pan that has a decent lip on it
- bacon fat
- pancake batter
- some sort of utensil
- fresh caught fish
Directions:
- Catch a fish that you would like to eat.
- Fillet the fish, remove the bones, and cut the meat into bite-seized pieces.
- Heat up the bacon fat in the pan so it is nice and hot. It should sizzle if you flick a couple drops of water into it.
- Dip the fish bites in pancake batter.
- Put the batter-coated fish into the the bacon fat and let cook.
The result is delicious, crispy, battered, fish bites that are a great addition to any camping meal! We ended up doing it for both breakfast AND dinner that day.
